What holds us back from opening ourselves up to live into who we truly are? What prevents us from living out our calling, whether in the spiritual or vocational sense? The question, “What holds you back from being available for commissioned moments,” was posed in a She Reads Truth post, but isn’t it a valid thought for all areas of our lives? We all have value to add, so what holds us back from the willingness to be sent on the mission to apply it?
I think what often holds me back is the chaos of living in the tension of knowing what I’m meant to do but doubting that I know how or have enough confidence to do it.
Think of all the ways this messy situation can play out: You know you want to welcome people into your home but you doubt your ability as a hostess. You know you want to grow your start-up but you’re not confident in your marketing skills. You know you have creative talents to offer but doubt that anyone else would be interested.
These examples can all be true for me too.
Yet it’s in this mess that we also discover what we’re capable of. When we’re able to step into the chaos – or more like jump into it – we open ourselves up and make ourselves available to new opportunities. Rather than assessing the chaos, when we are willing to engage in it, we often understand what it is that we have to offer others. We gain more clarity on what we’re being sent into the world to do.
Yet to engage in this way means we have to be willing to straddle the line of clarity and chaos. Mess and order. We have to live into the truth of both/and. Both knowing you have dreams that are worth pursuing and recognizing that you can’t control all of the results. Both recognizing that chaos is the starting point of growth and taking steps to bring order and clarity.
Both understanding that how you spend your days determines how you live your dream. And knowing that growth takes time.
