The last two weeks have flown by! I know it’s summer when weekend trips start happening more frequently, and I have a hard time getting everything I want to accomplished during the week. It’s a full but exciting season…
Two weekends ago was a beach weekend in Hilton Head with four of my girlfriends. But before heading to the beach, I attended the Leadercast Conference, one that my nerdy self always enjoys. This year’s conference theme was Beyond You because “effective leadership requires us to look beyond ourselves and consider the larger community around us – to focus outward, rather than inward.” I posted a full recap of the amazing speakers, such as Dr. Henry Cloud, Archbishop Desmond Tutu, Andy Stanley, Laura Bush, and Malcolm Gladwell on my Career Flight Plan blog.
Some of my favorite quotes were:

Birthday Beach Bash
From the Leadercast Conference, two of my friends picked me up and we headed to Hilton Hilton to meet up with two of our other friends. The occasion was celebrating my friend Becca’s 30th birthday! We rented a great (very affordable!) condo that was just a short walk over a beautiful boardwalk to the beach. Last year around this same time, all of us were at the Nashville Country Music Half-Marathon… the one that I hailed a cab halfway through!
So we started off Saturday morning with a nice run on the beach.
The entire day was beautiful, and we spent about six hours on the beach. It was such a great time of relaxation, reading, walking the beach, and catching up. Our friend Anna had made us quinoa and kale salads for lunch, so we also enjoyed a lunch picnic.
While reading my Cooking Light on the beach, I saw that they’d reposted one of my tweets about making their delicious Chicken Tikka Masala! I always take pictures of the meals I make from their magazine, so it was exciting that they noticed!!
That evening we went to dinner and enjoyed hanging out on the dock and watching dolphins nearby!
On Sunday morning we read and discussed a Psalm together and spent time in prayer. It was such an authentic time of community, and I was hit with gratitude for having a group of friends to share life’s struggles and joys with and lift those up to the Lord together. Afterwards, we went for a long walk on the beach before we had to check out. We then sat by the pool for a bit before getting a late lunch on our way back home.
This past weekend, John and I headed to North Carolina to celebrate my sister-in-law Amy’s graduation from Wake Forest University! We spent Friday night through Sunday morning with his parents and other sister, Emma, at their house in Cashiers, NC. Saturday was a relaxing morning before heading out for a walk and tennis in the afternoon. That evening we played Heads Up, a super fun game from the App Store, before Emma and I convinced John to watch a Gilmore Girls episode with us… he was a good brother (and husband!) and agreed!
Sunday morning we got up at 5am to drive to Wake Forest for Amy’s Baccalaureate and award’s ceremony. It was very special hearing Amy’s professor talk about her leadership and contributions to the school as she presented her with a Leadership Award for her Women & Gender Studies major.
That evening we celebrated with Nate (Amy’s boyfriend) and his family at a restaurant called Meredian, which was a special treat!
Then Monday morning was graduation. The campus was buzzing with media because the commencement speaker was Jill Abramson, the former executive editor of The New York Times who had just been fired. She delivered a funny talk, congratulating the seniors on attracting so much media attention and telling them that she’d made an appointment at career services. Three and a half hours later, the seniors threw their graduation caps into the air and we took family pictures!
All in all, the past two weekends have been filled with friends and family, a beautiful picture of community and celebration.
